Choosing the right gear for your run
Keeping comfortable in cold or hot or wet conditions is key to your enjoyment of running through the summer. The right wicking fabrics and colors of apparel will help you stay comfortable and let you focus on your run instead on the temperature. Keep avoiding cotton apparel because it can get heavy with moisture acting like an evaporative cooler and can be abrasive against your skin.
For all conditions you will want breathable fabrics, waffle-like outer fabric for warm conditions, and tighter weave for cooler conditions. Layering works well for colder conditions and zippers offer ventilation. Wool is GREAT cold conditions because it breathes, regulates temperature, and keeps you warmer when wet. Wool also is a natural anti-microbial, so it can be worn all week without washing and it won’t get stinky.
Remember, don’t overdress. If you feel comfortable just standing outside you are going to warm up after a mile or two of running or walking, and that long-sleeve top or jacket may end up around your waist. You will learn with a little experience what to wear for any weather conditions. Covering or exposing head, neck helps in regulating your temperature. Layer up and get out there.
