It is cold out there .
Stay warm in
winter running
conditions.
Keeping comfortable in warm or cool conditions is key to your enjoyment of running through the fall and winter. The right wicking fabrics and layering of apparel will help you stay comfortable and let you focus on your run instead on the tempurature. Keep avoiding cotton apparel because it can get heavy with moisture acting like an evaporative cooler and can be abrasive against your skin.
Remember, don't overdress. If you feel comfortable just standing outside you are going to warm up after a mile or two of running or walking, and that jacket may end up around your waist. You will learn with a little experience what to wear and how to layer for any weather conditions. Covering or exposing head, neck, and hands helps in regulating your temperature. Half-zip tops and zip vests also make it easier to let out excess heat.
For most fall weather running you will be fine with a good 1/2 zip top, and shorts or light-weight tights or pants. A hat or headband will keep your head protected from a cool breeze. On a cool morning when the wind is blowing a thin vest will keep the chill out.
For colder conditions wear more or thicker layers. Visors will help keep the sun out of your eyes, reducing squinting, helping you relax. Hi-Viz apparel and bands will keep you safe and seen in low-viz conditions.
